The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has released the following details regarding Commencement of Courts in Colombo:

SUPREME COURT AND COURT OF APPEAL
The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal have already published the list of cases to be called.
In view of the sensitive situation pertaining in the Keselwatte Police Division, the BASL has made representations to the Judicial Service Commission suggesting proposals.

We are reliably informed that if any Attorney has a difficulty in attending the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal on the 11th May 2020 and thereafter, the Attorney may take steps to inform the Registrar of the Supreme Court / Court of Appeal in writing or communication informing of the difficulty to attend court proceedings.

If any Attorney finds his matters being listed at different times, such Attorney may inform the Court of his difficulty when the first such matter is called before the Bench where he appears first.

We have also been informed that no adverse orders will be made whenever the inconvenience of a Counsel is brought to the attention of the Court. We have also been informed by the Court of Appeal that unless a matter is submitted to be urgent by parties, there would be flexibility as to adjournment. From Tuesday, 12th May, the Court of Appeal will also exhibit staggered times outside the respective court houses indicating the respective time slots

THE CIVIL APPEALS HIGH COURT - COLOMBO
The cases fixed for 11th May 2020 will be postponed and will not be taken up. The dates Will be informed on the notice board on Monday, 11th May 2020. The method in which the court would function, will be informed on Monday, 11th May 2020. Even thereafter, no adverse orders will be made whenever parties are not present or not represented, for a reasonable period of time.

COMMERCIAL HIGH COURT
We have been informed that no cases (other than any urgent cases) will be taken up in open court on 11th and 12th May 2020. There will be a notice which will be displayed regarding the next dates.
We have also been informed that no adverse orders would be made for non-appearance during this period.

THE DISTRICT COURT OF COLOMBO
We have been informed that no cases (other than any urgent cases) will be taken up in open court on 11th and 12th May 2020. There will be a notice which will be displayed regarding the next dates.
 
MAGISTRATE’S COURT IN COLOMBO – HULFTSDORP
The cases fixed for 11th and 12th May 2020 (except new Bail matters and urgent matters) will be postponed and will not be taken up. Preparatory work will be conducted on 11th and 12th May.

GENERAL
As regards to the attire and many other matters, a decision will be taken when the BASL meets the JSC on Tuesday, the 12th to streamline the matters.
Please also be advised to discourage litigants attending any of the aforesaid Courts.
